Building a better battery is a difficult task, full of trade-offs. A battery may have higher energy density, but be explosive, another may be cheaper to produce, but have a short life. It’s very difficult to create a better battery that falls in that “Goldilocks zone” of meeting all the needs of EVs. But tons of R&D and innovation are working on it, and making progress.
Incremental gains, though not revolutionary, CAN stack up on each other, and move things forward faster than expected. And when we approach a tipping point, such as cost-parity with ICE cars, even small advances can suddenly alter the landscape. That may be where we are today, as most OEMs get serious about putting competitive EVs on their product roadmap. And in a world where the best battery can make a huge difference in product performance, and cost, getting that element right is extremely important.
One important risk factor for the progress of EVs is a lack of raw materials for batteries. EVs can never make up a large share of the automobile market as long as there are shortages of the raw materials for batteries. Currently, about 80% of cobalt comes from the DRC (Congo), and Lithium is hard to source as well. Nickel also remains expensive. So, even as we get closer to EV and ICE cost parity, that would drive demand for the raw materials, and a bounce-back increase in the price of said materials. If new chemical designs for batteries can address the supply challenge...will the resulting batteries meet the rigors of automobiles? And what about alternative energy storage, such as Hydrogen?

Also, a mass shift to EVs cannot take place without a parallel shift in the energy industry. A shift to renewable energy, improvements to the grid, and advances in fixed energy storage will be an important part of the eventual transformation of the auto industry. Stationary energy storage requirements are easier to meet than automobile... but still have insane scalability requirements.
