Innovation Review on V2x

This month we invite our Autotech Council and Telecom Council communities to a joint meeting to explore how V2x communications can improve safety, increase efficiency, enhance transportation management systems and reduce emissions. Join us as we hear from analysts, market leaders and startups innovating in this segment.

This past October, a tragic incident made headlines when a "superfog" led to a 150-vehicle fatal pile-up on a Louisiana freeway. Unfortunately, such events are not isolated incidents, as fog frequently results in multi-car accidents, especially on fast-moving freeways worldwide. V2x technology offers a potential solution to this problem and various others by connecting cars through dedicated radios, allowing them to share essential information about road conditions ahead on their travel route.

V2x, short for Vehicle to Anything, encompasses a broader concept than just V2V (Vehicle to Vehicle), as it involves cars sharing information with infrastructure, governments, and other vehicles, essentially creating a connection to the cloud. Despite the long-standing recognition of the benefits of V2x dating back to the last century, we have yet to see substantial progress or standardized implementations. A recent article by Roger Lanctot, a well-respected Auto Technology analyst (and friend of the Autotech Council) highlighted the inability to get a grand plan through:

“ITS executives clearly were attracted by the prospect of significant spending and investments in support of V2X.  But the USDOT failed to make a compelling case for its promotion at a time when the industry is already caught in the throes of electrification and driving automation.”

While the prospect of government-sanctioned, standardized V2x in the USA remains distant, China and Europe may be making more significant strides in this direction.

In essence, because of this slow progress to an industry standard, we are still in the early days of V2x. Yet, this still leaves room for a wide array of point solutions that can leverage the existing hardware in modern vehicles. Automakers are increasingly offering connected cars equipped with 4G radios capable of streaming media, receiving over-the-air updates, sharing data, and being essentially "V2x ready." This creates a prime opportunity for automakers, startups, car operating system vendors, insurance companies, and other stakeholders to develop solutions that address specific safety and convenience aspects of V2x. For instance, a driver using Waze on their phone would have been aware of the stopped traffic miles ahead on that Louisville freeway. There's no reason why innovative solutions cannot be seamlessly integrated into today's vehicles. Instead of trying to solve the entire problem at once, we can start by addressing individual parts of it.

During the Autotech Council's meeting on V2x, we will delve into the opportunities, share case studies, and offer insights into the world of V2x. We will also have the privilege of meeting the innovators behind solutions that can be implemented in the near term.
