This month Autotech Council meets to discover the technology and market forces that are bringing innovation to the commercial vehicle segment - from fleets and tuk-tuks to delivery vans and vehicle-as-a-service opportunity abounds. Join Autotech Council members, OEMs, automotive suppliers, mobility startups and VCs to discover the current state of innovation in this segment and highlight relevant startups with cutting edge solutions for Commercial Vehicles.

Commercial vehicles are different from personal cars. They are less subject to the whims of consumers around tastes, trends, appearance, and even price. They are more singly focused on the question of ROI: Will this vehicle reduce costs and increase revenues over its useful life more than the alternative?

One of the more striking characteristics of Commercial vehicles is the extremely large variance in size and function. It spans delivery bikes to cross-country road trains, and from pure cargo, to passengers, to some future autonomous rolling drugstore. You’ll see highly specific equipment, but also highly versatile equipment. For manufacturers, there are challenges in getting to scale with specialized equipment, which makes modularity on a common platform attractive (eg the F150 & chassis platforms.)

But other trends that run through commercials are also affecting the entire vehicle industry, such as electrification and big-data-driven efficiencies. But, unsurprisingly, in commercial vehicles, the EV solutions need to be different than the consumer space to handle the different usage and utilization.

Some innovations specific to the commercial vehicle space include:

  • The opportunity for H2 in long-haul
  • Diesel hybrids
  • HD motors, storage, & electric power systems
  • Connectivity, data, and logistics
  • Driver monitoring, comfort
  • Safety
  • Predictive maintenance
  • Maximizing ROI
  • Environmental and CO2 objectives and regs
  • Cold chain solutions and HVAC
